Title: A review of silvicultural systems and harvesting alternatives for old-growth forests of coastal British Columbia

Year: 1990

Author(s): John Nelson; Dave Daust; Steve Finn

Type: Report (unpublished)

Description:
A comprehensive literature review, supplemented with an annotated bibliography describes and evaluates the use of alternative cutting practices for west coast, old-growth stands in British Columbia. The report addresses four main topics: (1) the ecology and resource uses of old-growth timber, (2) alternative silvicultural systems, (3) suitability of silvicultural systems to the west coast, (4) harvest system alternatives. The cutting methods are described, their relative advantages and disadvantages are presented, and their possible implementation is evaluated. With the exception of clearcutting, there is very little scientific literature on the use of silvicultural systems in coastal old-growth forests. There is, however, abundant information on the use of alternative harvesting systems. Strong winds, saturated soils, shallow rooted tree species, and crew safety will certainly limit the use of shelterwood and selection cutting methods. This does not preclude their use on suitable, protected sites where aesthetic and environmental concerns are high. higher logging and forest road costs can be expected for shelterwood and selection methods. Research is needed to address clearcut opening size, and the time interval between teh harvest of adjacent stands.

Title: Initial analysis of forest use in Clayoquot Sound

Year: 1989

Author(s): Herb Hammond

Type: Report (published)

Description:
"This document presents an intial analysis of the forest resources and forest practices of the Clayoquot Sound area. As a means of establishing a clear basis for discussion, important principles and concepts related to forest use are defined. A general dexcription of the forest ecosystems in the study area is presented with a broad analysis of their value to the community. An overview of present timber management in Clayqout Sound is provided with a consideration of its impact on the forest ecosystem, on future timber producing capacity, and on other forest uses and values of the area. An alternative wholistic approach to forest use, designed to sustain all forest users, is provided." - from the introduction, p. 1.
