Title: News Around Clayoquot Sound

Year: 1990

Type: Book

Description:
Introduction: Local news, local heroes, local myths. In this quick age when so many newspapers melt suddenly into conrad blackness, an independent publication is a rarity. And a newspaper that is aided by a non-profit society, staffed by volunteers and concerns itself with local news, local heroes and local myths is so rare it could be considered experimental. Which is what The Sound curiously is, and has been. With grass-seed money ($4500), a few people started this brash publication as a bi-weekly early in 1990. It has, like a reluctant choo-choo, huffed and puffed, bellowed and farted, started and stopped, collapsed, re-energized, though it could. Now, still unravelling, it has started up yet again, in magazine form. Look out. During these seven years, Clayoquot Sound has become much more than the beautiful land-and-sea power spot of the Nuu-chah-nulth and much more than a tidal facility for corporate and multinational exploitation. It has become, among other things, a celebrated, fiercely sought-after destination. ("Where did those 850 people get arrested?" "Have you paddled The Clayoquot yet?") And it's become almost a spiritual magnet for neo-suburban pilgrims. It has changed, is changing, will change. But for many of us--for many of the 3000 people who choose to live year round in this sound -- there is still a fragile sense of place to be embraced, and a strong sense of community, of caring. A local publication - if it passes on accurate information and mirrors the eccentricities of the place -- can become a sort of psychic centre, a common focus for the people who seek love and vision and daily bread there. We've gone for that focus, that centre. There's a lot in this book. As you know, the past is entwined with the present. These pages release only some of the best-beloved stuff from The Sound's first two years. But within this anthology the "news" has become formalized. It's become entrenched. And that's all right. As the crazy poet Ezra Pound noticed: "Literature is news that stays news."

Title: Brief to Clayoquot Sound Sustainable Development Task Force

Year: 1989

Author(s): Representatives of the District of Tofino

Type: Manuscript

Description:
"This paper constitutes the Tofino representatives' perception of the Terms of Reference for the Clayoquot Sound Sustainable Development Task Force. If this Task Force is to succeed, a process which move from the general to the specific must be developed and agreed to by all participants. Providing priority for specific issues before finalizing an overall process favours special interests and compromises the meanings of consensus and sustainable development. The first step in the process of preparing a sustainable development strategy for Clayoquot Sound must be agreement upon what 'sustainable development' means." - from the introduction
