Title: A model for standardizing dungeness crab (Cancer magister) catch rates among traps which experiences different soak times

Year: 1989

Author(s): B. D. Smith; G. S. Jamieson

Type: Journal Article

Description:
The abundance and size frequency distribution (SFD) of Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) within traps varies with soak time. Such bias in catch rates was reduced using a standardized model that corrected for (1) changes in bait effectiveness over time and (2) agonistic interactions between crabs within traps and those attempting entry. The model estimated the entry and exit of crabs based on the results of trapping experiments specifically designed to (1) emphasize the above two processes and (2) estimate escapement rates from traps for crabs of different sizes. Results clearly indicated the importance of these two processes in modifying trap contents over time and led to the introduction of the term 'virtual catch rate' (VCR), defined as the rate at which crabs would enter a trap if catch rates did not change with increasing soak time. VCRs are not observed in practice except perhaps for very short soak times, but can be estimated from trap samples by incorporating the aforementioned processes into a standardized model. We found VCR to be a better index of abundance than mean daily catch per trap, and believe it may have utility for other trap fisheries.

Title: Exploitation and mortality of male dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) near Tofino, British Columbia

Year: 1989

Author(s): B. D. Smith; G. S. Jamieson

Type: Journal Article

Description:
Male dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) were sampled by traps and monitored by tagging as they moulted and entered the fishery near Tofino, British Columbia, from April 1985 until March 1987. Males first recruited to the fishery after moulting from the u=129-mm CW (carapace width) to the u=156-mm CW normal instar. Sublegal-sized males (less than 154 mm notch-to-notch CW) in the u=156-mm CW instar (42% of this instar) were found to have a high annual natural mortality with less than 10% surviving to legal size. Legal-sized males experienced high annual fishing mortality, so consequently a small component of the commercial catch consisted of males in large instars. Size frequency analysis, which measured the perfect exploitation of the u=156mm CW instar, indicated that legal-sized mails remained in relatively low abundance during this year-round fishery because of intense exploitation. Mark-recovery data and size frequency analysis also indicated this intense fishery was sustained throughout most of the year by a protracted moulting season. Consequently, we observed prolonged periods with a high percentage of less desirable soft-shelled males in the commercial catch.

Title: Growth of Male and Female Dungeness Crabs near Tofino, British Columbia

Year: 1989

Author(s): Barry D. Smith; Glen S. Jamieson

Type: Journal Article

Description:
During an 18-month study, we monitored (by beam trawl and tagging) a year-class of Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) as crabs grew and as males recruited to the fishery at 154 mm in notch-to-notch carapace width (CW). We used an enhanced size-frequency analysis to estimate that males, inferred to be 2 years old in summer 1985 and mainly in the 104-mm (mean CW) instar, molted twice during an 18-month period to attain the 156-mm instar (SD=13 mm). About 58% of males in the 156-mm instar had attained legally harvestable size. Similarly, females inferred to be 2 years old in summer 1985 and mainly in the 103-mm instar, molted to the 121-mm instar during summer and autumn. 1985 and subsequently appeared to mold annually. Our size-frequency analyses were enhanced by (1) incorporating regression statistics for growth increments versus CWs, (2) simultaneouly analyzing several size-frequency distributions obtained sequentially in time, and (3) accounting for the exploitation of legal-sized males. Our results for females indicated decreasing SDs of CSs for successive instars. This patterns follows from negative relationship between the size of molt increment and CW, and it might be anticipated for other crab species with a similar growth function.
