Title: Shorebird Population Estimates in the Fraser River Delta and Tofino Mudflats, British Columbia

Year: n.d.

Author(s): Robert Butler

Type: Report (unpublished)

Description:
Introduction: Each spring tremendous flocks of shorebirds migrate north along the Pacific coast of North America. In British Columbia, most of the small sandpipers gather in two locations--the Fraser River delta and the Tofino mudflats on the west coast of Vancouver Island. From those two sites, most shorebirds fly non-stop to the Copper River delta and Cook Inlet in Alaska. In 1988, the Point Reyes Bird Observatory staff began a coastwide census to determine the status and future prospects for shorebirds in wetlands of the Pacific Flyway. Several hundred volunteers counted shorebirds at sites in British Columbia, Washington, Nevada, Utah and California. This report provides estimates on populations from British Columbia as the Canadian Wildlifer Serve contribution to the project.

Title: Coarse woody debris n a forested watershed on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Year: n.d.

Author(s): Rodney J. Keenan; Alex Inselberg

Type: Report (unpublished)

Description:
(from Introduction) There were two objectives in this study. The first was to estimate volume and mass of downed coarse woody debris occurring in different forest ecosystems in the Tofino Creek watershed. The second was to determine the variability in volute estimates of coarse woody debris with different sampling intensities. The latter objective was aimed at providing a guide for the degree of sampling necessary for reasonably precise estimates of the volume of coarse woody debris for future surveys in this area.
